History of the Philodendron scandens
Philodendron scandens, now often listed under the botanical name Philodendron hederaceum, is a classic heartleaf philodendron from the tropical regions of Central America and the Caribbean. This evergreen climbing and trailing plant impresses with its glossy, heart-shaped dark green leaves and its uncomplicated growth. Over time it forms long shoots that can either hang down decoratively or climb up a support. Thanks to its adaptability, Philodendron scandens is ideal as an easy-care houseplant and also copes with somewhat less light, as long as the spot is not too dark. Pet owners should take care, however: the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats and dogs. If nibbled, symptoms can include severe irritation of the mouth, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partial shade with indirect light. Somewhat less light is also tolerated, but direct, intense sunlight should be avoided.
- Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C if possible.
- Humidity: Normal room air is well tolerated. However, higher humidity promotes stronger growth and particularly beautiful leaves.
- Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water evenly but moderately. The top layer of soil may dry out slightly between waterings. Always pour away excess water.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–4 weeks with a foliage plant fertiliser. Feed much less in winter.
- Special features: Philodendron scandens can be grown either as a trailing plant or as a climbing plant. With a climbing support, the shoots can be trained upwards. Regular cutting back encourages bushier growth.
- Important for pet owners: Not suitable for households where cats or dogs can nibble on plants. If eaten, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat.
Overwintering tips:
Philodendron scandens can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept as bright as possible, protected from cold draughts and given a little less water. Feeding can be reduced or paused during the low-light period.
