History of the Tillandsia Funkiana
The Tillandsia Funkiana is an extraordinary species of air plant (bromeliad family) from Venezuela and Colombia. In the wild, it grows epiphytically on trees or rocks and forms long, thin, almost needle-like leaves arranged in a spiral. Its red flowers, which develop from the green rosettes, are particularly striking. As a houseplant or terrarium plant, it is a decorative rarity and needs no soil:
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–28 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: High; mist regularly with low-lime water.
-
Substrate: No soil needed; can be mounted on wood, cork or stones.
-
Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week or dip briefly in water, then let it dry off well.
-
Feeding: Once a month, add highly diluted bromeliad fertiliser when misting.
-
Special features: This houseplant is perfect for creative decorations and is a real eye-catcher thanks to its delicate growth habit.
Care as a terrarium plant:
-
Light: Bright artificial light or daylight; do not place directly next to lamps.
-
Temperature: Warm and constant, ideally 20–28 °C.
-
Humidity: High (over 70 %); daily misting recommended.
-
Note: Particularly well suited to humid tropical terrariums, as it grows without substrate and can be attached to many surfaces.
