History of Tillandsia ionantha
Tillandsia ionantha is one of the most popular air-purifying houseplants from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). It originally comes from Central and South America, where it grows epiphytically on trees or rocks. This small, easy-care plant is particularly fascinating because its leaves turn from green to bright red before flowering. The flower itself is violet and provides a beautiful contrast. Tillandsia ionantha is a perfect choice for lovers of exotic houseplants.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light or gentle morning/evening sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; avoid temperatures below 12 °C.
- Humidity: 50–70 %; regular misting or a humidifier is recommended.
- Substrate: No substrate needed, as it grows as an epiphyte; can be placed on wood, stone or in a bowl.
- Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week with low-lime water or soak once a week. Let excess water drain off well.
- Feeding: Every 4 weeks, mist with heavily diluted Tillandsia fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant is very adaptable and grows well in both dry and humid environments.
Care as a terrarium plant
- Light: Plenty of indirect light or suitable artificial lighting.
- Temperature: 20–30 °C, not below 15 °C at night.
- Humidity: High humidity (60–80 %) is ideal.
- Substrate: Not necessary; can be placed on decorative material such as branches or stones.
- Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week or soak every 7–10 days. Important: ensure good air circulation after misting.
- Terrarium conditions: Perfect for tropical and dry terrariums with good ventilation.
Overwintering tips:
The temperature should not drop below 12 °C. In winter, mist less often and ensure good air circulation. Tillandsia ionantha is an ideal houseplant for anyone who loves easy-care, decorative plants.
