History of Tillandsia ionantha 'Red'

Tillandsia ionantha 'Red' is a particularly striking variety of the classic Tillandsia ionantha. This fascinating houseplant comes from Central and South America, where it grows epiphytically on trees or rocks. Unlike the green basic form, this variety is characterised by a more intense red colouring of its leaves before flowering. Its violet flower creates a stunning contrast and makes it one of the most popular air-purifying houseplants.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light or gentle morning/evening sun.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; avoid temperatures below 12 °C.
  • Humidity: 50–70 %; regular misting or a humidifier is recommended.
  • Substrate: No substrate needed, as it grows as an epiphyte; can be placed on wood, stone or in a bowl.
  • Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week with low-lime water or soak once a week. Let excess water drain off well.
  • Feeding: Every 4 weeks, mist with heavily diluted Tillandsia fertiliser.
  • Special features: Its intense red colouring develops particularly well in high light intensity, so place it somewhere as bright as possible.

Care as a terrarium plant:

  • Light: Plenty of indirect light or suitable artificial lighting.
  • Temperature: 20–30 °C, not below 15 °C at night.
  • Humidity: High humidity (60–80 %) is ideal.
  • Substrate: Not necessary; can be placed on decorative material such as branches or stones.
  • Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week or soak every 7–10 days. Important: ensure good air circulation after misting.
  • Terrarium conditions: Suitable for tropical and dry terrariums with good ventilation.

Overwintering tips:

The temperature should not drop below 12 °C. In winter, mist less often, but make sure the humidity does not drop too much. Tillandsia ionantha 'Red' is a colourful, easy-care addition to any houseplant collection.
