History of the umbrella tree Schefflera Amate
The umbrella tree Schefflera Amate, botanically Schefflera actinophylla 'Amate', is an impressive tropical houseplant from the ivy family (Araliaceae). The species originally comes from Australia, New Guinea and parts of South-East Asia, where it grows as a stately tree. Characteristic features are the large, glossy leaves, which unfold like fingers from a central point and give the plant its name. The 'Amate' variety is characterised by strong, upright growth and particularly lush foliage. It is comparatively easy to care for and ideal as a solitary plant for larger living spaces, offices and entrance areas. Pet owners should take care, however, as Schefflera species can be toxic to cats and dogs.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded with plenty of indirect light. A few hours of morning or evening sun are well tolerated. Avoid intense midday sun where possible.
- Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C and cold draughts where possible.
- Humidity: Normal indoor air is well tolerated. Slightly higher humidity, however, supports strong and healthy growth.
- Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water moderately and let the top layer of soil dry slightly between waterings. Remove excess water from the pot cover.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–4 weeks with a foliage plant fertiliser. Feed much less in winter.
- Special features: In good conditions, the Schefflera Amate can grow into a stately houseplant. Regular pruning can encourage more compact and bushier growth. The large leaves should occasionally be carefully dusted.
- Important for pet owners: The umbrella tree is not suitable as a plant for cats and dogs to nibble on. If ingested, it can cause irritation in the mouth, salivation, vomiting and difficulty swallowing, among other things.
Overwintering tips:
The Schefflera Amate can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept as bright as possible and protected from cold draughts and dry heating air. Due to the lower light levels, water more carefully and reduce or pause feeding.
