History of the umbrella tree Schefflera Amate

The umbrella tree Schefflera Amate, botanically Schefflera actinophylla 'Amate', is an imposing yet easy-care houseplant from the tropical regions of Australia and Southeast Asia. Its characteristic large, glossy, deep green leaves radiate out like fingers from a central point and give the plant its typical name. The 'Amate' variety grows upright and develops a strong, tree-like character over time, which makes it particularly striking as a solitary plant. It is extremely robust and adaptable, and is also suitable for larger living rooms, offices or bright entrance areas. Pet owners should take care, however, as Schefflera species contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partial shade with plenty of indirect light. Some morning or evening sun is usually well tolerated, but intense midday sun should be avoided.
  • Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C if possible.
  • Humidity: Normal indoor air is well tolerated. However, slightly higher humidity supports strong growth and beautiful leaves.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Watering: Water moderately and let the top layer of soil dry slightly between waterings. Remove excess water from the pot cover.
  • Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–4 weeks with a fertiliser for foliage plants. Feed much less in winter.
  • Special features: In good conditions, the Schefflera Amate can grow into a stately houseplant. Regular pruning helps to encourage more compact, bushier growth.
  • Important for pet owners: The umbrella tree is not suitable for cats and dogs. If eaten, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause irritation in the mouth, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing, among other symptoms.

Overwintering tips:

The Schefflera Amate can easily be kept warm all year round as a houseplant. In winter, it should be placed as bright as possible and protected from cold draughts and direct heat from radiators. Due to the lower light levels, the amount of water should be reduced and feeding paused or greatly reduced.
