The weeping fig Exotica, also known as Ficus benjamina 'Exotica', is a popular houseplant valued for its attractive leaves and easy care. This plant originally comes from the tropical regions of Asia and is closely related to the fig tree family. The weeping fig Exotica is characterised by its dark green leaves with a bright yellow or cream-coloured pattern. These unique leaf markings give the plant an exotic and decorative touch.
Important care tips for the weeping fig as a houseplant:
Location: Place the weeping fig Exotica in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight. The plant tolerates partial shade well and also thrives indoors under artificial light. Houseplants such as the weeping fig Exotica feel most at home in a warm room with a temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
Watering: Make sure the soil of the weeping fig Exotica is always slightly moist but not soaked. Let the top layer of soil dry out a little before you water again. Houseplants generally need less water in winter, so it is advisable to adjust the amount of water accordingly.
Humidity: The weeping fig Exotica likes high humidity, but it is adaptable and also copes with normal room conditions. To increase humidity, you can place a shallow tray of water next to the plant or mist the leaves regularly with a water sprayer.
Feeding: Houseplants such as the weeping fig Exotica need regular feeding to stay healthy and strong. Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser and feed every two to four weeks during the growing season, i.e. in spring and summer. In winter, feeding is only needed about every six to eight weeks.
Repotting: You should repot your weeping fig Exotica every few years to give it enough room for root growth. Choose a slightly larger pot and use a high-quality houseplant soil. Make sure the new pot has enough drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.
Pests: Like many houseplants, the weeping fig Exotica can be attacked by pests such as spider mites or aphids. Inspect the plant regularly for signs of pest infestation and, if necessary, remove them with a damp cloth or treat them with a suitable insecticide.
Rest period: The weeping fig Exotica does not usually need a special rest period. It can grow and thrive all year round. However, if you notice slower growth in winter, this is normal and no cause for concern.
