History of the Yucca elephantipes

Yucca elephantipes, also known as the giant yucca or spineless yucca, originally comes from Central America and belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). With its sturdy trunks and long, sword-shaped, dark green leaves, it resembles a palm and instantly gives rooms an exotic feel. Yucca elephantipes is extremely robust, easy to care for and copes well with dry indoor air. With enough light it develops strong, upright growth and over many years can grow into a stately houseplant. Pet owners should take care, however, as yucca species contain saponins and can be harmful to cats and dogs if eaten.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to very bright. A few hours of direct sun are well tolerated, especially in a spot where the plant has been gradually accustomed to the sun.
  • Temperature: Around 18–25 °C is ideal. In winter it can be a little cooler, but preferably not below 10–12 °C for long periods.
  • Humidity: Normal dry indoor air is tolerated very well. The yucca does not need high humidity.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, free-draining substrate. Cactus soil or houseplant substrate loosened with sand or mineral components is ideal.
  • Watering: Water moderately and let the substrate dry out well between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, as it can quickly lead to root rot.
  • Feeding: From spring to autumn, feed roughly every 3–4 weeks with a foliage plant or container plant fertiliser. Reduce or pause feeding in winter.
  • Special features: Yucca elephantipes is particularly robust and forgives the occasional forgotten watering. Over time, sturdy trunks and several leaf crowns can develop. Old or dry leaves can be removed carefully.
  • Important for pet owners: Yucca elephantipes is not suitable as a plant for cats and dogs to nibble on. The saponins it contains can cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting or diarrhoea if eaten.

Overwintering tips:

Yucca elephantipes can stay in a warm room all year round. A bright location is particularly important in winter. At the same time, it should be watered much less, as the plant needs less water in lower light. A cooler, bright location is also possible as long as the plant remains protected from frost.
