History of the bird's nest fern Asplenium antiquum
The bird's nest fern (Asplenium antiquum) is an elegant, easy-care fern that delights with its glossy, fresh green leaves. The long, narrow fronds grow in a rosette from the centre of the plant and form the characteristic nest shape that gives the fern its name. Asplenium antiquum originally comes from the tropical and subtropical forests of East Asia, especially Japan and Taiwan, where it grows epiphytically on trees or rocks. Thanks to its fresh green and harmonious growth habit, it is one of the most popular ferns for living spaces.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright to partially shaded position with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct sun.
• Temperature: 18–26 °C is ideal; temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided.
• Humidity: High; increased humidity promotes healthy growth and beautiful leaves.
• Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and free-draining fern substrate or high-quality foliage plant soil.
• Watering: Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Use low-lime water if possible. Do not pour water directly into the heart of the leaf rosette.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 4 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.
• Special features: With its lush foliage, the bird's nest fern contributes to a pleasant indoor climate and is ideal for bathrooms or other rooms with higher humidity.
Overwintering tips:
Water a little less in winter, but never let the substrate dry out completely. Avoid draughts and dry heating air as far as possible.
