History of the areca palm

The areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) comes from Madagascar and is one of the most popular houseplants worldwide. With its elegant, feathery fronds, it brings tropical flair to living spaces and also improves air quality. It is easy to care for and, under optimal conditions, grows into a stately houseplant.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot without direct midday sun; partial shade is tolerated, but growth is slower.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; avoid temperatures below 13 °C.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity; regular misting is recommended.
  • Substrate: Free-draining potting soil with sand or perlite for better drainage.
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging; low-lime water preferred.
  • Feeding: From spring to autumn, every 2–4 weeks with foliage plant fertiliser.
  • Special features: This houseplant is ideal for indoor spaces, but needs sufficient humidity to avoid brown leaf tips.

Overwintering tips:

Water less, but never let it dry out. Do not keep at temperatures below 13 °C. The areca palm is a stylish and air-purifying houseplant that, with the right care, will bring joy for many years.
