History of the banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis)

The majestic Ficus benghalensis, also known as the banyan tree, originally comes from India and Sri Lanka and is one of the most impressive members of the fig family. In the wild, its aerial roots form veritable tree landscapes and it can overgrow entire areas. As a houseplant , it is valued for its decorative foliage and tree-like growth. In homes it stays much smaller, but still brings a tropical flair to the room.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; some direct sun is tolerated.

  • Temperature: Ideally 18–28 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.

  • Humidity: Medium to high; occasional misting can help, especially in winter.

  • Substrate: Free-draining, nutrient-rich soil; a mix with some sand or perlite is ideal.

  • Watering: Water moderately; let the soil dry out slightly before the next watering. Avoid waterlogging.

  • Feeding: Roughly every 4 weeks during the growing season with foliage plant fertiliser.

  • Special features: This houseplant forms aerial roots, which can develop when humidity is high.

Overwintering tips:

In winter, water less and make sure it gets enough light. The banyan tree is an imposing yet hardy houseplantthat really comes into its own indoors when given enough space.
