History of the Epiphyllum chrysocardium (fern leaf cactus)

The Epiphyllum chrysocardium, also known as fern leaf cactus, originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Central America. It is not a typical cactus – it grows epiphytically (on trees) and impresses with its deeply lobed, fern-like leaves. Thanks to its unusual growth habit and its night-blooming flowers, the plant quickly became a sought-after speciality among houseplant collectors.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct sun.

  • Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; avoid draughts and temperatures below 15 °C.

  • Humidity: Medium to high; regular misting or a spot in the bathroom is beneficial.

  • Substrate: Loose, airy substrate as for orchids or epiphytes (e.g. with bark, perlite, coir).

  • Watering: Water moderately; keep the substrate slightly moist but not soaked.

  • Feeding: Feed lightly every 4 weeks during the growing season.

  • Special features: A special houseplant with a bizarre leaf structure – well suited as a trailing plant or hanging basket plant.

Overwintering tips:

In winter, place it somewhere cooler (approx. 15–18 °C) and water less. This unusual houseplant prefers constant conditions without extreme fluctuations.
