History of the wax plant Hoya wayetii
The Hoya wayetii originally comes from the Philippines and is one of the most decorative wax plant species. It is very popular as a houseplant because of its narrow, elongated leaves with a dark green edge and a lighter centre. With good care, it produces fragrant, waxy flowers in pink to purple that appear in dense umbels.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright position with plenty of indirect light; a little morning or evening sun encourages flowering.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: Medium to high; regular misting supports healthy growth.
-
Substrate: Loose, well-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of orchid soil, coir and perlite.
-
Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out slightly before watering again. Avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
-
Special features: This houseplant flowers particularly well if it is not moved around constantly and its roots are a little snug in the pot.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, move it to a brighter spot, water more sparingly and do not keep it below 15 °C. Hoya wayetii is a long-lived, decorative houseplant that delights with its splendid flowers.
