The indoor banana, scientifically known as Musa dwarf cavendish, is a popular houseplant. This plant belongs to the banana family (Musaceae) and is a miniature version of the famous Cavendish banana, which is known worldwide for its delicious taste. The indoor banana originally comes from the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia. In its natural environment it grows as a shrub or small tree and can reach considerable heights. Indoors, however, it remains much more compact and usually reaches a height of about one metre. This houseplant is known for its broad, green leaves and the occasional production of small banana fruits, which, however, are usually not suitable for eating. The indoor banana is a robust houseplant that can thrive for years with proper care. With its attractive leaves and occasional fruits, it brings tropical flair into your home and is a popular choice among houseplant lovers.
Important care tips for the Musa Dwarf as a houseplant:
Light: The indoor banana loves bright, indirect light. Place it near a window, but avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.
Temperature: Keep the room temperature between 18°C and 27°C, as this plant does not like the cold. Avoid draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Humidity: Indoor bananas prefer high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly with water or use a humidifier to improve the indoor climate.
Watering: Always keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Let the top layer of the substrate dry out slightly between waterings.
Feeding: Feed your indoor banana every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.
Repotting: Every few years the indoor banana should be repotted into a slightly larger pot to make room for root growth.
Pests and diseases: Watch out for pests such as spider mites and aphids. If necessary, use environmentally friendly pest control methods to treat these problems.
Pruning: Remove dead leaves regularly to maintain the health and appearance of your indoor banana.
