History of Aglaonema Gold
Aglaonema Gold is an attractive tropical ornamental foliage plant from the arum family (Araceae) and originally comes from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Aglaonemas are known for their decorative leaves, compact growth and great adaptability. The Gold variety delights with its striking green and gold colouring and adds a special splash of colour to living spaces even in less bright positions. It grows bushy and upright, making it ideal for homes, offices and other indoor spaces. However, pet owners should be careful, as aglaonemas contain calcium oxalate crystals and are poisonous to cats and dogs.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded with indirect light. Overly intense direct sun should be avoided, as the leaves can be sensitive. A bright position supports the golden leaf markings.
- Temperature: Around 18–26 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C wherever possible.
- Humidity: Increased humidity is preferred, but normal indoor air is usually well tolerated. Avoid dry heating air where possible.
- Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water evenly but moderately. The top layer of soil may dry out slightly between waterings. Always pour away excess water.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–4 weeks with a foliage plant fertiliser. Feed much less in winter.
- Special features: Aglaonema Gold grows compactly and is comparatively easy to care for. Its attractive leaf markings look particularly beautiful with sufficient indirect light. Dust on the leaves can be carefully removed with a damp cloth.
- Important for pet owners: Aglaonema Gold is not suitable for cats and dogs. If nibbled, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.
Overwintering tips:
Aglaonema Gold can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept in as bright a spot as possible and protected from cold draughts. Because there is less light, water more carefully and reduce feeding. Slightly higher humidity helps to prevent dry leaf tips during the heating season.
