History of the Aloe humilis Shark
The Aloe humilis 'Shark' is an extraordinary succulent that wins hearts with its striking leaf shape and compact growth. The sturdy, blue-green leaves grow in dense rosettes and are set with conspicuous white teeth reminiscent of a shark's skin or teeth – hence the cultivar name 'Shark'. With its sculptural appearance, it is a real eye-catcher for a windowsill, desk or succulent collection. The species Aloe humilis originally comes from the dry regions of South Africa, where it is adapted to intense sunshine and long dry periods.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Very bright to sunny spot; several hours of direct sun promote compact growth and intense leaf colour.
• Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; temperatures below 10 °C should be avoided.
• Humidity: Low; dry indoor air is tolerated very well.
• Substrate: Free-draining cactus or succulent substrate with a high mineral content.
• Watering: Water sparingly; let the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed about once a month with a weakly dosed cactus or succulent fertiliser.
• Special features: The toothed leaves and compact rosette shape give the plant an extraordinary, almost sculptural appearance. With good care, orange to coral-red flowers on long flower stalks may appear in spring or early summer.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water very sparingly and place it in as bright a spot as possible. Temperatures between 10 and 15 °C are ideal. During the dormant period, the plant needs only a little water.
