History of the Anthurium Ace of Spades × papillilaminum
The Anthurium Ace of Spades × papillilaminum is a fascinating Anthurium hybrid for lovers of special foliage plants. The cross combines the dark, elegant appeal of Ace of Spades with the characteristic velvety leaf texture of Anthurium papillilaminum. The elongated, heart-shaped leaves can develop a deep dark green to almost black colouring and show pronounced, high-contrast veining. On young leaves in particular, the reddish-brown to bronze new growth adds extra variety of colour. As a hybrid, its appearance can vary from plant to plant. It is precisely this individual development that makes it especially interesting for Anthurium collectors. Both parent lines come from tropical habitats and prefer warm, humid conditions.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as the velvety leaves can be sensitive to it.
• Temperature: 20–28 °C is optimal; avoid temperatures below 16 °C where possible.
• Humidity: High; around 70–80 % is ideal. Consistent humidity supports the development of large, strong leaves.
• Substrate: Very airy, coarse and free-draining aroid substrate, for example made of pine bark, perlite, sphagnum and coco chips.
• Watering: Water evenly but carefully. The substrate should stay slightly moist and dry out a little on the surface between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed roughly every 2–3 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for aroids.
• Special features: The velvety leaf surface, the dark colouring and the pronounced leaf veining make this cross a special collector's piece. Good air circulation helps to maintain high humidity without standing moisture.
Overwintering tips:
Water a little less in winter, but continue to ensure high humidity and sufficient light. Temperatures should remain as constant as possible above 18 °C. Avoid cold draughts and sharp temperature fluctuations. With less light, growth slows down considerably.
