History of the areca nut palm Areca catechu
The areca nut palm (Areca catechu) is a tropical palm species that originally comes from Southeast Asia and Oceania. It is best known for its seeds, which are called betel nuts and are chewed in many Asian cultures. As a houseplant, it is valued for its elegant, feathery leaves, which give any room a tropical flair. It is one of the popular houseplants because it is easy to care for and improves the indoor climate.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–27 °C; should not fall below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Medium to high (over 50 %); occasional misting is recommended.
- Substrate: Free-draining, humus-rich soil with sand or perlite to loosen it.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist; avoid waterlogging. Water less in winter.
- Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing phase.
- Special features: This houseplant is sensitive to dry heating air and should not be kept permanently in cool draughts.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water less, but keep the humidity high. Temperatures should not drop below 15 °C. The areca nut palm is an impressive houseplant that thrives for many years with the right care and brings an exotic touch to any home.
