History of the Anthurium Red Crystallinum
The Anthurium Red Crystallinum is a particularly sought-after form from the group of velvet-leaved anthuriums and is characterised by its spectacular new shoots in shades of red and burgundy through to violet. As they mature, the leaves become dark green and velvety, while the striking silvery-white veining remains and creates a fascinating contrast. In the plant trade, the name Red Crystallinum is used for selected lines with particularly intensely coloured new growth. The well-known Red Crystallinum lines go back to breeding work by Tim Anderson and his so-called “Wonderboy” line and were later further selected by various breeders.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: A bright to very bright spot with indirect light. Direct, intense sun should be avoided, as the velvety leaves can quickly be damaged. Good light supports strong growth and beautiful colouring of the new shoots.
-
Temperature: Around 20–28 °C is ideal. Temperatures should not fall below 15 °C if possible. Avoid cold draughts and sharp temperature fluctuations.
-
Humidity: High humidity of at least 60–70 % is recommended. For particularly beautiful leaves and trouble-free new growth, around 70–80 % is ideal.
-
Substrate: A loose, airy aroid substrate of orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum or coconut fibre is ideal. Good drainage is important so that the sensitive roots receive enough oxygen.
-
Watering: Keep evenly slightly moist, but never permanently wet. As soon as the top layer of substrate has dried slightly, you can water again. Ideally use rainwater, filtered or low-lime water.
-
Feeding: From spring to autumn, feed regularly with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage or aroid plants. During the low-light winter months, reduce feeding or stop it when growth comes to a halt.
-
Special features: The striking red to violet colouring appears mainly on the young leaves. As the leaf hardens off, the colour changes and the leaf develops its typical dark green, velvety surface with silvery veining.
-
Important for pet owners: Anthuriums contain irritant calcium oxalate crystals and are considered toxic if ingested. The plant should therefore be kept out of reach of cats, dogs and small children.
Care as a terrarium plant:
The Anthurium Red Crystallinum is very well suited to a warm, humid terrarium or a bright plant cabinet. The constantly high humidity particularly supports the development of the velvety leaves and helps prevent young leaves from drying out at the edges as they unfurl. At the same time, good air circulation is important so that the high humidity does not lead to permanently standing moisture.
-
Light: Bright, indirect light or a suitable grow light. Avoid direct sunlight.
-
Temperature: Tropical temperatures of around 22–28 °C are optimal. Even at night, the temperature should not fall much below 18 °C if possible.
-
Humidity: Very high humidity of around 70–90 % is preferred. A mister or humidifier can ensure constant conditions.
-
Substrate: An airy terrarium substrate of sphagnum moss, orchid bark and perlite is excellent. The substrate should retain moisture without staying permanently wet.
-
Watering: Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist and let the surface dry out a little between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
-
Terrarium conditions: A warm, bright terrarium with high humidity and good air circulation offers very good conditions for vigorous new growth and intense leaf markings.
Overwintering tips:
The Anthurium Red Crystallinum should also be kept warm and bright in winter. Temperatures of around 18–25 °C remain ideal. Due to the lower light levels, growth usually slows, so water less and feed only sparingly. The substrate may dry out slightly, but should not dry out completely. Especially in winter, cold draughts and permanently wet roots should be avoided.
