History of the Calathea Crimson

The Calathea Crimson belongs to the arrowroot family (Marantaceae) and comes from the tropical rainforests of South America. It is known for its velvety leaves with intense red and green markings. As a typical understorey plant, it loves high humidity and constant conditions, which is why it is very popular both as a decorative houseplant and as a terrarium plant.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot with indirect light; no direct sun.

  • Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; do not keep below 16 °C.

  • Humidity: High; regular misting is important.

  • Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate with good water retention.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; avoid waterlogging.

  • Feeding: Feed lightly every 4 weeks during the growing season.

  • Special features: This houseplant is sensitive to hard water – ideally use rainwater or filtered water.

Care as a terrarium plant:

  • Location: Ideal for tropical terrariums with little direct light.

  • Temperature: Constantly between 20–26 °C.

  • Humidity: 70–90 % for optimal growth.

  • Substrate: Moist, loose terrarium substrate with good drainage.

  • Watering: Regular misting is sufficient; never let the substrate dry out.

Notes:
