History of the Hoya Australis Tricolor

The Hoya Australis Tricolor is an exotic climbing plant from Australia that captivates with its three-coloured leaves – green, creamy white and pink. It belongs to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) and is particularly suitable for terrariums, as it loves high humidity and can fully develop its leaves there. Besides its decorative leaf colouring, with good care it can also produce fragrant, star-shaped flowers.

Care as a terrarium plant:

  • Light: Bright spot without direct midday sun; north- or east-facing windows or grow lights are ideal.

  • Temperature: Ideally 20–28 °C; not below 15 °C.

  • Humidity: Very high (70–90 %), perfect for terrariums.

  • Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate, e.g. orchid soil with perlite or bark.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Mist regularly.

  • Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with orchid fertiliser.

  • Special features: This terrarium plant likes to climb and needs a climbing support; the leaves only reveal their full beauty in high humidity.

Overwintering tips:
