History of the Hoya krohniana Eskimo
Hoya krohniana Eskimo is a charming, compact-growing wax plant that delights above all with its small, heart-shaped leaves with silvery, shimmering speckles. The dark green leaves are covered with fine silver spots, which make them look almost metallic depending on the light. Despite its compact size, the plant develops long, trailing shoots and, with good care, forms spherical flower clusters with small, white, star-shaped flowers and a pleasant sweet scent. Hoya species originally come from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where they grow epiphytically on trees. As a baby plant, Hoya krohniana Eskimo is ideal for collectors or as an introduction to the world of hoyas.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; tolerates some morning or evening sun well.
• Temperature: 18–28 °C is ideal; temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided.
• Humidity: Medium to high; increased humidity promotes healthy growth and flowering.
• Substrate: Loose, airy and free-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of orchid soil, perlite and coconut fibre.
• Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a low dose of liquid fertiliser for foliage plants or hoyas.
• Special features: The silver-speckled leaves and fragrant flowers make this hoya a popular collector's item. The long shoots are ideal for hanging baskets or small climbing supports.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water a little less and keep in a bright, warm spot. Temperatures should stay as constant as possible above 15 °C. Avoid draughts and cold locations.
