History of the Philodendron billietiae Variegata
Philodendron billietiae Variegata is a rare and highly sought-after collector's plant that impresses with its combination of an exceptional leaf shape and attractive variegation. The large, elongated, arrow-shaped leaves have strikingly orange to copper-red petioles and are interspersed with creamy white to yellowish areas. The variegation can range from fine speckles and marbling to larger pale patches, making every leaf unique. Philodendron billietiae originally comes from the tropical rainforests of French Guiana, Brazil and Guyana, where it grows as a climbing plant in warm, humid forest areas. The variegated form is particularly popular with aroid collectors and develops increasingly impressive leaves as it matures.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Sufficient light is particularly important to preserve the variegation. Avoid intense midday sun, as the pale areas of the leaves are more susceptible to sunburn.
• Temperature: 20–28 °C is optimal; avoid temperatures below 16 °C where possible.
• Humidity: High; around 60–80 % is ideal. Consistently increased humidity supports the development of large, healthy leaves.
• Substrate: Loose, airy and free-draining aroid substrate, for example made of pine bark, perlite, coco chips and some high-quality potting soil.
• Watering: Water moderately to regularly. Keep the substrate slightly moist and let the surface dry out a little between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed roughly every 2–3 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants or aroids.
• Special features: The combination of long, arrow-shaped leaves, striking orange petioles and individual variegation makes Philodendron billietiae Variegata a real highlight for collectors. A climbing support can encourage its natural growth and contribute to larger leaves on mature plants.
Overwintering tips:
Water a little less in winter and continue to keep it as bright and warm as possible. Temperatures should remain as constant as possible above 16–18 °C. Avoid cold draughts and sharp temperature fluctuations. Due to the lower light levels, growth can slow down considerably in the winter months.
