History of the Carmona Fukien tea bonsai
The Carmona Fukien tea bonsai (Carmona microphylla), also known as Fukien tea or Chinese tea shrub, originally comes from Southeast Asia and is valued in bonsai culture for its small, leathery leaves and its attractive, gnarled trunk structure. The plant is known for its small white flowers, which form during the growing season and offer a special aesthetic. It is suitable for beginners as well as experienced bonsai enthusiasts and can be grown both indoors and outdoors.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with direct sunlight for several hours a day; a south-facing window is ideal.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C is optimal; in winter the temperature should not drop below 10 °C.
- Humidity: Prefers increased humidity; occasional misting of the leaves promotes good health.
- Substrate: Free-draining bonsai substrate, e.g. a mix of akadama, pumice and bark.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging; water more often in summer and less in winter.
- Feeding: Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced bonsai fertiliser.
- Special features: Regular pruning is important to encourage shape and branching; flowers can be removed once they have faded.
Keeping as a seasonal plant outdoors:
- Location: From spring to autumn, the Carmona Fukien tea can stand outdoors in a sunny, sheltered spot.
- Temperature: Ideally 10–25 °C; at temperatures below 5 °C the plant should be brought indoors.
- Overwintering: In winter, the plant should be kept in a bright, cool place to support its rest period.
Winter dormancy:
The Carmona Fukien tea bonsai needs a rest period to replenish its energy and encourage growth in spring. The ideal temperature for winter dormancy is between 10 and 15 °C. A bright, cool spot such as a conservatory or a cool stairwell is ideal. During this time, watering should be reduced, but the substrate must not dry out completely. Only in spring, when growth resumes, can normal watering and feeding start again.
