History of the Ligustrum bonsai
The Ligustrum bonsai comes from the privet genus (Ligustrum), which is widespread in temperate climate zones worldwide. Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense) is particularly popular, as it grows quickly, tolerates pruning and is ideal for bonsai cultivation. Its small leaves, fine branching and pretty white flowers make it an attractive bonsai for beginners and advanced growers alike. It can be kept both as an indoor bonsai and as a seasonal plant in a sheltered outdoor area.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright position, ideally with a few hours of direct sunlight every day.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C is ideal; cooler in winter (10–15 °C) to encourage the rest period.
- Humidity: Prefers medium to high humidity; mist occasionally.
- Substrate: Free-draining bonsai substrate with a high proportion of akadama or pumice.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but no waterlogging. Water more often in summer.
- Feeding: Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season with organic bonsai fertiliser.
- Special features: Tolerates pruning very well; regular pruning encourages fine branching.
Keeping as a seasonal plant outdoors:
- Location: From spring to autumn, the Ligustrum bonsai prefers a partially shaded to sunny spot outdoors.
- Temperature: 10–25 °C is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 5 °C or provide suitable protection.
- Overwintering: A cool, sheltered spot such as a conservatory or a bright stairwell is ideal.
Winter dormancy:
The Ligustrum bonsai is partially hardy and needs a slight rest period. The optimal temperature is between 5 and 12 °C. A bright, cool spot such as an unheated conservatory or a frost-free garage is well suited. Water less during winter dormancy, but do not let the substrate dry out. Only resume feeding in spring, once growth starts again.
