History of bromeliads
Bromeliads are tropical plants from Central and South America, known for their intensely coloured flowers and decorative leaf rosettes. In the wild, many species grow on trees or on the ground in humid rainforests. Thanks to their adaptability, some varieties are suitable both as houseplants and as terrarium plants. With their bright colours, bromeliads bring an exotic highlight to living spaces or terrariums.
Care as a houseplant / terrarium plant:
• Light: Bright spot with indirect light; avoid direct midday sun.
• Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; not below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Medium to high; also ideal for terrariums.
• Substrate: Loose, free-draining soil, e.g. bromeliad or orchid substrate.
• Watering: Water moderately; a little water can stand in the leaf rosette, but refresh it regularly. Avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing phase, feed sparingly every 4–6 weeks.
• Special features: Produces offsets (pups) after flowering; smaller species are well suited to terrariums.
Overwintering tips:
Water less in winter and keep in a bright spot. Keep temperatures as constant as possible above 15 °C. Bromeliads are easy to care for and bring tropical flair to living spaces and terrariums. 🌺🌿
