History of the Calathea roseopicta 'Crimson'
Calathea roseopicta 'Crimson' is a striking houseplant from the tropical rainforests of South America. It belongs to the arrowroot family (Marantaceae) and is known for its large, velvety leaves in deep dark red with delicate, lighter veins. Like many Calathea species, it follows a day-night rhythm and moves its leaves depending on the light – which is why it is also called a 'prayer plant'. This exotic beauty is a popular choice among lovers of tropical houseplants.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot without direct sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
- Humidity: High (60–80 %); regular misting or a humidifier is recommended.
- Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate with good drainage, e.g. a mix of potting soil, coconut fibre and perlite.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging; ideally water with soft, low-lime water.
- Feeding: From spring to autumn, every 2–4 weeks with a weak dose of liquid fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant is sensitive to dry air and cold draughts – a sheltered spot with high humidity is ideal.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; artificial lighting possible in a terrarium.
- Temperature: 22–28 °C during the day, not below 18 °C at night.
- Humidity: Very high (70–90 %), making it perfect for humid terrariums.
- Substrate: Loose, well-aerated terrarium substrate with high moisture retention.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- Terrarium conditions: Particularly well suited to tropical rainforest terrariums with high humidity.
Overwintering tips:
The temperature should never drop below 15 °C. During the heating season, ensure sufficient humidity to prevent brown leaf edges. Calathea roseopicta 'Crimson' is a fascinating houseplant for anyone who loves tropical elegance.
