History of the Dracaena Surculosa
Dracaena Surculosa, also known as "gold dust dracaena", belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Africa and Asia. Unlike many other Dracaena species, it does not have long, narrow leaves, but oval, glossy leaves with decorative yellow speckles, which have earned it the name "gold dust". This exotic houseplant has a rather shrubby habit and is a popular choice for indoor spaces.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded position; also tolerates less light, but then grows more slowly.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C is optimal; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Medium to high (50–70 %); occasional misting promotes healthy leaves.
- Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of potting soil, sand and perlite.
- Watering: Water moderately, only once the top layer of soil is dry; avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.
- Special features: This houseplant grows slowly but can develop a compact, bushy shape over time.
Overwintering tips:
The temperature should not fall below 15 °C. In winter it needs less water, but the humidity should remain stable. With its patterned leaves, this easy-care houseplant brings a touch of tropical elegance to any home.
