History of the Dypsis areca palm
The areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) comes from Madagascar and has been one of the most popular houseplants for many decades. It used to be grown mainly in large courtyards; today it delights with its bushy, elegant growth and its air-purifying properties. Its fine, golden-green shimmering fronds bring a tropical flair to any room.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright position with plenty of indirect light; no strong midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: High; mist regularly or use a humidifier.
-
Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate with good drainage.
-
Watering: Keep evenly moist; allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 2 weeks during the growing season with liquid fertiliser.
-
Special features: This houseplant improves the indoor climate and looks particularly decorative in living rooms and office corners.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water less, but do not let it dry out completely; temperatures not below 15 °C. This way, the Dypsis areca palm remains an easy-care, elegant houseplant.
