History of the Eucalyptus Gunnii
Eucalyptus gunnii, also called the cider gum, originally comes from Tasmania and belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Its roundish, silvery blue-green leaves with their pleasantly aromatic scent are particularly characteristic. Eucalyptus gunnii grows quickly and can be kept compact as a container plant. Its decorative, silvery foliage also makes it particularly attractive for modern living spaces and terraces.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Very bright to sunny spot. Plenty of light is important for strong and compact growth.
- Temperature: Around 15–25 °C is optimal. In winter, the plant can be kept considerably cooler.
- Humidity: Normal indoor air is sufficient. No particularly high humidity necessary.
- Substrate: Use a loose, free-draining and slightly acidic substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water regularly during the growing season and keep the soil slightly moist. Let excess water drain away. Water less in winter.
- Feeding: From spring to autumn, feed every 2–4 weeks with a fertiliser for foliage plants.
- Special features: Eucalyptus gunnii grows very quickly and can be cut back regularly if needed. Pruning encourages more compact growth and keeps the silvery blue juvenile foliage particularly attractive.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it as bright as possible and rather cool. Water less, but do not let the root ball dry out completely. For container plants, make sure they are in a sheltered spot and avoid waterlogging. Eucalyptus gunnii is comparatively hardy, but young plants and potted plants should be protected from severe frost.
