History of the fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata)
The fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) is a popular houseplant originally from the tropical rainforests of West Africa. It belongs to the mulberry family (Moraceae) and is known for its large, striking leaves with their characteristic violin-like shape. In recent years, the fiddle-leaf fig has become one of the most sought-after houseplants, as it creates a modern and elegant ambience in both homes and offices.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright position with plenty of indirect light; direct sun can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: Ideally 20–25 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Medium to high humidity; regular misting of the leaves can be helpful.
- Substrate: Free-draining, humus-rich potting soil, ideally with some perlite for better drainage.
- Watering: Water moderately; the soil should be evenly moist but not wet. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed every 4–6 weeks with a liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.
- Special features: This houseplant grows relatively quickly and can reach an impressive height in optimal conditions.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, reduce the water temperature and amount to slow growth. The fiddle-leaf fig should be kept in an area where temperatures do not drop below 15 °C. With its distinctive leaf shape, Ficus lyrata is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a stylish, easy-care houseplant.
