History of the fiddle-leaf fig Ficus lyrata (standard form)
The fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) with a stem is one of the most popular houseplants of recent years – known for its large, violin-shaped leaves and elegant growth. It originally comes from the tropical rainforests of West Africa. In living spaces, its sculptural appearance has made it a design classic among houseplants and it is especially sought after as a specimen plant in bright rooms.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Very bright spot with plenty of indirect light; some direct morning or evening sun is tolerated.
-
Temperature: 18–25 °C is ideal; no draughts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
-
Humidity: Medium to high; occasional misting does the leaves good.
-
Substrate: Loose and free-draining; high-quality houseplant soil with perlite or expanded clay.
-
Watering: Water moderately; only water once the top layer of soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: About every 4 weeks during the growing season.
-
Special features: Clean the dust off the leaves regularly – this improves respiration and strengthens the plant.
Overwintering tips:
Water less in winter and do not place below 15 °C. Even in the darker season, the fiddle-leaf fig remains an imposing houseplantthat impresses with its natural foliage.
