Product information "Fishtail Palm Caryota Mitis - Large"

History of the fishtail palm (Caryota mitis)

The fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) is a striking houseplant originating from the tropical regions of South-East Asia, in particular Indonesia and Malaysia. It belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae) and is known for its unique fan-shaped leaves, which resemble the shape of fish tails. In the wild, this palm often grows as an understorey plant and is valued as a popular houseplant for its decorative leaves and robustness.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; direct sun should be avoided as it can burn the leaves.
  • Temperature: Ideally 20–30 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
  • Humidity: High humidity (above 60 %) is ideal; regular misting or a humidifier promotes growth.
  • Substrate: Free-draining, humus-rich soil that retains water yet drains well.
  • Watering: Water moderately; the substrate should be evenly moist but not wet. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring to autumn), every 4–6 weeks with a liquid palm or foliage plant fertiliser.
  • Special features: The fishtail palm grows quickly and can reach a considerable height, making it an impressive eye-catcher.

Overwintering tips:

In winter, reduce watering and keep temperatures above 15 °C. This easy-care palm is ideal for large rooms and creates a relaxed atmosphere with its tropical flair.
