History of the Fittonia Mosaic
Fittonia Mosaic belongs to the genus Fittonia and comes from the tropical rainforests of South America, especially Peru. This small-growing houseplant impresses with its high-contrast leaves. It was bred specifically for its exceptional patterning and is a popular choice for closed terrariums, as it prefers high humidity.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot with indirect light.
- Temperature: Ideally 20–26 °C; do not keep below 16 °C.
- Humidity: High (over 60 %); regular misting recommended.
- Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate with good drainage.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Special features: This houseplant is sensitive to dry air and needs consistent moisture.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Humidity: Very high (70–90 %); perfect for a closed humid terrarium.
- Location: Partial shade to shade, as too much light can bleach the leaves.
- Substrate: Humus-rich and slightly moist; ideally a mix of coco soil, bark and perlite.
- Water requirements: Often lower in a terrarium thanks to the humid climate; just keep slightly moist.
Overwintering tips:
