History of the orchid cactus – Epiphyllum ackermannii
The Epiphyllum ackermannii, known as the orchid cactus, originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Central America. As an epiphytic cactus, it grows on trees in its native habitat and impresses with its spectacular, often bright red flowers. It was already being cultivated in European greenhouses in the 19th century and is today one of the most popular flowering houseplants among cactus lovers.
The flower – a real highlight:
The huge, trumpet-shaped flowers of Epiphyllum ackermannii are a real eye-catcher. They can grow up to 15 cm in size, glow an intense red and usually open in the evening – a magical moment for many plant lovers. The flowering period is typically in spring or early summer and, with good care, lasts several days. The plant often produces several flowers at once, making for a spectacular show.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; tolerates cooler phases for short periods.
-
Humidity: Medium to high; occasional misting encourages flowering.
-
Substrate: Free-draining, humus-rich substrate, e.g. orchid soil mixed with cactus soil.
-
Watering: Water moderately; the substrate may dry out slightly between waterings.
-
Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a fertiliser for flowering plants.
-
Special features: This houseplant grows best in a hanging basket or as a climber on a support.
Overwintering tips:
Cooler temperatures (12–15 °C) and a dry rest period in winter encourage flower formation the following year. Epiphyllum ackermannii is a fascinating houseplant whose flowers are among the most spectacular in the plant kingdom.
