The orchid cactus Epiphyllum pumilum originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Central America, where it grows epiphytically on trees. This fascinating houseplant stands out for its flat, succulent shoots and above all for its large, intensely fragrant night-blooming flowers, which are usually white and stay open for only a few hours – a real highlight for plant lovers!

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright, partially shaded spot without direct midday sun.

  • Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; not below 12 °C.

  • Humidity: Moderate to high; occasional misting is beneficial.

  • Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate – ideally orchid compost mixed with cactus soil.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; water more sparingly in winter. Avoid waterlogging.

  • Feeding: Every 2–3 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
