History of the staghorn fern Platycerium bifurcatum
The staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) originally comes from Australia and New Guinea, where it grows epiphytically on trees. It owes its name to its striking, antler-like branching fronds, which make it one of the most distinctive houseplants. It has been cultivated as a decorative plant for many decades and is particularly popular when grown as a wall-mounted or hanging plant.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; do not keep below 12 °C.
-
Humidity: High; regular misting or a spot in the bathroom is ideal.
-
Substrate: Best mounted on wood or in a loose, well-draining substrate (orchid or fern substrate).
-
Watering: Keep the substrate slightly moist; water by dipping or gentle watering, avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 4 weeks with a weak dose of liquid fertiliser.
-
Special features: This houseplant forms shield fronds, which protect the roots and should not be removed.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water a little more sparingly, but do not let it dry out; temperatures not below 12 °C. The staghorn fern Platycerium bifurcatum is an exotic and extraordinary houseplant that gives any room a special flair.
Important:
The brown structures in the centre of a staghorn fern (Platycerium) are known as shield fronds or basal fronds. They are green at first and turn brown and dry over time – this is completely normal and even important.
-
Why are they good?
-
Protection
The shield fronds cover the root ball and protect it from drying out and mechanical damage. -
Moisture storage
They act like a sponge and help to store moisture from the air or liquid absorbed from above. -
Nutrient collectors
In nature, the shield fronds catch falling organic material (leaves, dust), which decomposes and serves as a source of nutrients. -
Important for stability
They help the fern to hold on to its base (e.g. tree bark) – indoors too, for example on a mounting board.
👉 Do not remove! Removing the brown shield fronds does the fern more harm than good. They are a natural and useful part of the plant.
