History of the string of hearts Ceropegia woodii
Ceropegia woodii, also known as string of hearts, is a delicate, succulent trailing plant from southern Africa. Its long, thin shoots are covered with small, heart-shaped leaves that show an attractive silvery-green marbling and often a purple underside. As the plant ages, small tubers can form on the shoots, through which it can also be propagated vegetatively. The string of hearts shows its special charm as a trailing plant when the long shoots can grow freely downwards. Under suitable conditions, it also produces small, unusually shaped pinkish-purple flowers. Ceropegia woodii is considered an easy-care and drought-tolerant houseplant.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to very bright with plenty of indirect light. Some morning or evening sun is well tolerated and can enhance the beautiful leaf markings. Intense midday sun behind glass should be avoided.
- Temperature: Around 18–26 °C is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 10 °C where possible. Cold draughts and permanently cool, damp conditions can cause damage.
- Humidity: Normal indoor air is sufficient. Particularly high humidity is not necessary for this succulent plant.
- Substrate: A very free-draining cactus or succulent substrate is ideal. A mix with perlite or coarse mineral material ensures good drainage and protects the sensitive roots from waterlogging.
- Watering: Only water when the substrate has dried out almost completely. Then water thoroughly and let excess water drain away completely. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, as the plant stores water in its fleshy leaves and tubers.
- Feeding: During the growing season, feed sparingly with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for cacti or succulents. Feeding about 2–3 times during the active growing phase is sufficient.
- Special features: The long shoots can reach several metres and look particularly beautiful hanging from hanging baskets or raised positions. Small tubers on the shoots are typical of the species and can be used for propagation.
- Important for pet owners: Ceropegia woodii is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Nevertheless, pets should be prevented from eating larger amounts of plant material.
Care as a terrarium plant:
Ceropegia woodii can also be grown in a bright, well-ventilated terrarium. As it is a succulent plant, the terrarium should not be permanently tropical and humid. A very free-draining substrate, plenty of light and good air circulation are particularly important.
- Light: Very bright, indirect light or suitable plant lighting. With too little light, the shoots can become long and thin.
- Temperature: Around 20–27 °C is ideal. It can be slightly cooler at night, but the temperature should ideally not drop below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Moderately increased humidity is tolerated. Permanently very high humidity is not necessary.
- Substrate: Very mineral and free-draining, for example cactus or succulent substrate with added perlite or pumice.
- Watering: Only water when the substrate is completely or almost completely dry. Excess water must be able to drain away reliably.
- Terrarium conditions: An open or well-ventilated terrarium is more suitable than a permanently closed humid terrarium. The plant should be able to dry out well again after watering.
- Special features: The long shoots can hang decoratively over branches, pieces of cork or the edge of the terrarium, creating a particularly beautiful cascading effect.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, Ceropegia woodii should still be kept as bright as possible. The lower amount of light slows growth, so water less accordingly. The substrate may dry out completely between waterings. In a cooler spot, water particularly sparingly, as the combination of low temperatures and damp soil can quickly lead to root rot.
