History of Java moss (Vesicularia dubyana)

Java moss (Vesicularia dubyana) is a versatile and popular plant that originally comes from the tropical regions of Asia. It belongs to the family of true mosses and is known for its fine, soft leaves and its robust adaptability. It is often used in aquariums, paludariums and terrariums, as it can thrive both underwater and in humid environments. Java moss plays an important role in creating natural habitats and offers small animals shelter and food.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Prefers indirect light; tolerates dim light or shade well.
  • Temperature: Ideally 20–28 °C, at least 18 °C in winter.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 60–80 % is ideal, as it grows more slowly in dry air.
  • Substrate: No conventional substrate needed; the moss can be attached to stones, wood or other surfaces.
  • Watering: Regular misting provides the necessary moisture; avoid waterlogging.
  • Special features: Java moss is an easy-care, decorative plant that can also be used in airy hanging baskets or as green ground cover.

Care as a terrarium plant:

  • Light: Dim, indirect light; plant lamps can promote growth.
  • Temperature: Tropical temperatures between 22–28 °C, not below 18 °C at night.
  • Humidity: Very high humidity of 80–90 % is essential; a mister or frequent misting ensures optimal conditions.
  • Substrate: Can grow directly on moist surfaces such as roots, stones or moss mats.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate or surface slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging; regular misting supports growth.
  • Terrarium conditions: Java moss is ideal as decoration or ground cover in tropical terrariums and offers microorganisms and small animals ideal habitats.

Overwintering tips:

Java moss needs constant temperatures of at least 18 °C in winter too. For houseplants or terrariums, sufficient moisture is essential to prevent the moss from drying out. A plant lamp can be a good help in maintaining growth during the darker season.
