History of the Monstera Dubia
Monstera Dubia is a rare climbing plant from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Unlike many other Monstera species, when young it grows flat against tree trunks and has small, heart-shaped leaves with a silvery-green pattern. Only when mature does it develop larger, perforated leaves. This extraordinary growth habit makes it a special houseplant for plant lovers.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with indirect light; avoid direct sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–27 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
- Humidity: High humidity preferred; regular misting recommended.
- Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate with pieces of bark and perlite.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Special features: This houseplant needs a climbing support to encourage its natural growth.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Location: Ideal for tropical terrariums with high humidity.
- Humidity: 70–90 % recommended for healthy growth.
- Temperature: 20–28 °C; constant warmth encourages climbing.
- Substrate: Loose, free-draining terrarium substrate that retains moisture.
- Watering: Regular misting ensures optimal conditions.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water less and do not let temperatures drop below 15 °C. Monstera Dubia is a fascinating houseplant that impresses with its unique growth habit and leaf markings.
