History of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, also known as "true aloe", belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and originally comes from the dry regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It has been valued for centuries for its healing properties. Its gel in particular is used in skincare and natural medicine. This succulent is one of the best-known houseplants and impresses with its easy-care nature and attractive, rosette-shaped growth.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Sunny to bright spot; tolerates direct sun well.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; avoid temperatures below 10 °C.
  • Humidity: Low; copes well with dry air.
  • Substrate: Free-draining cactus soil or a mix of potting soil, sand and perlite.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, only once the substrate has dried out completely; be sure to avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring to autumn), every 4–6 weeks with cactus fertiliser.
  • Special features: This houseplant stores water in its thick leaves and can therefore go a long time without watering.

Overwintering tips:

Water less in winter and do not let temperatures drop below 10 °C. A bright spot is important, as otherwise aloe vera grown as a houseplant becomes leggy. This easy-care succulent is ideal for anyone looking for an uncomplicated yet useful plant.
