History of the Rhaphidophora elliptica Variegata Aurea
Rhaphidophora elliptica Variegata Aurea is a rare and particularly decorative climbing plant from the arum family (Araceae). The wild form Rhaphidophora elliptica comes from the tropical regions of Borneo, where it grows as a vigorous climber in humid tropical forests. The Aurea variegata form delights with elongated, elliptical leaves streaked with attractive golden yellow to cream-yellow variegation. Depending on the plant and the leaf, the markings can be more or less pronounced, giving each specimen its own individual character. With a climbing support, Rhaphidophora elliptica can develop its natural climbing habit particularly beautifully.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to very bright with plenty of indirect light. Good light supports strong and stable golden variegation. Intense midday sun should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
- Temperature: Around 18–28 °C is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15–16 °C where possible. Cold draughts and strong temperature fluctuations should also be avoided.
- Humidity: Increased humidity of around 60–80 % is preferred and supports healthy growth and the development of beautiful leaves.
- Substrate: A loose, airy and free-draining aroid substrate made of orchid bark, perlite, coconut fibre and some high-quality potting soil is ideal. Good drainage is important so that the roots get enough oxygen.
- Watering: Water evenly and let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging. The plant reacts sensitively to roots that are permanently wet.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–3 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants or aroids. In winter, cut back feeding accordingly as growth slows.
- Special features: The golden yellow variegation can vary from leaf to leaf. In very low light, the variegated portion can become weaker. A bright spot is therefore particularly important.
- Moss pole: A sturdy climbing support such as a moss pole is highly recommended. As a climbing plant, Rhaphidophora elliptica can grow more vigorously and with more structure on it and, in good conditions, develop larger leaves.
- Important for pet owners: Rhaphidophora species contain calcium oxalate crystals and should not be nibbled or eaten by cats, dogs or other pets. Therefore place the plant out of reach of animals.
Overwintering tips:
Rhaphidophora elliptica Variegata Aurea should be kept as bright and warm as possible in winter too. With less light, growth usually slows down, so water correspondingly less and feed only sparingly. The substrate may dry out a little more between waterings, but should not dry out completely for long periods. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C and cold draughts.
