History of Rhaphidophora ind. Variegata
Rhaphidophora ind. Variegata is an attractive tropical climbing plant from the arum family (Araceae). It delights with its heart-shaped to elongated leaves, which look particularly decorative thanks to their individual variegation in various shades of green, white and cream. With its climbing shoots, it is ideal for a plant support and, in good conditions, can develop larger and more impressive leaves over time. Like many tropical aroids, it prefers a warm position, good humidity and an airy substrate. However, pet owners should be careful, as Rhaphidophora species contain calcium oxalate crystals and are poisonous to cats and dogs.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to very bright with plenty of indirect light. Good light supports attractive, stable variegation. Avoid intense midday sun.
- Temperature: Around 20–28 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 16 °C where possible.
- Humidity: Increased humidity of around 60–80 % is preferred and supports the development of beautiful leaves.
- Substrate: An airy, free-draining aroid substrate made of bark, perlite, coconut material and a little humus-rich soil is ideal.
- Watering: Water evenly and let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–3 weeks with a weakly dosed foliage plant fertiliser. Feed less in winter.
- Special features: A plant support such as a moss pole supports the natural climbing growth and, with appropriate care, can encourage the development of larger leaves. In variegated plants, the proportion of white or cream can vary from leaf to leaf.
- Moss pole: Highly recommended, as Rhaphidophora, being a climbing plant, can grow more vigorously and with more structure on a support.
- Important for pet owners: Rhaphidophora ind. Variegata is not suitable for cats and dogs. If nibbled, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.
Overwintering tips:
Rhaphidophora ind. Variegata should be grown warm and as bright as possible all year round. In winter, it should be protected from cold draughts and watered more carefully because there is less light. Humidity should be kept as constant as possible, especially if the plant is near a radiator.
