The Schefflera arboricola Compacta, also known as the umbrella tree, is a compact-growing variety of the classic Schefflera. The species originally comes from Taiwan and Hainan and has been a popular houseplant for decades. The Compacta variety stands out for its dense growth, small glossy leaves and easy care - ideal for modern living spaces and offices.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; avoid direct sun.

  • Temperature: 18–25 °C is optimal; briefly lower is fine, but not below 12 °C.

  • Humidity: Average; occasional misting promotes health.

  • Substrate: Normal, free-draining potting soil, e.g. with some sand or perlite.

  • Watering: Water moderately; let the soil dry out slightly, avoid waterlogging.

  • Feeding: About every 4 weeks during the growing season with liquid fertiliser.
