History of Ceropegia

Ceropegia, also known as string of hearts, is an extraordinary houseplant with delicate, trailing stems and heart-shaped leaves. It originally comes from Africa, Asia and Australia, where it grows in dry regions. The species Ceropegia woodii is especially popular and is a valued houseplant thanks to its decorative leaves and easy-care nature.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; also tolerates some direct sun.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; do not keep below 10 °C.
  • Humidity: Undemanding; does not need high humidity.
  • Substrate: Free-draining substrate, e.g. cactus soil or potting soil with sand or perlite.
  • Watering: Water moderately; let the soil dry out well between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: Every 4–6 weeks with diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
  • Special features: This houseplant stores water in its leaves and needs little care.

Overwintering tips:

Keep cooler in winter (12–16 °C) and water more sparingly. Ceropegia is a charming, easy-care houseplant that delights with its elegant trailing stems.
