History of the sweetheart plant Hoya kerrii
The sweetheart plant Hoya kerrii is a small houseplant that instantly catches the eye with its heart-shaped leaves. It originally comes from Southeast Asia, where it grows as a climbing plant in tropical forests. Hoya kerrii is especially popular as a gift, as its heart-shaped leaves are seen as a symbol of love and affection. It is often sold as a single leaf cutting, but with a little patience it can grow into a magnificent houseplant.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: A bright spot with indirect light is ideal; direct sun can damage the leaves, while too little light inhibits growth.
- Temperature: Comfortable temperatures are between 18–26 °C; this houseplant likes warmth and does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Average room air is sufficient, but it thrives better with slightly increased humidity.
- Substrate: A loose, free-draining substrate, for example a mix of orchid compost and normal potting soil, is ideal.
- Watering: Water sparingly; only water again once the substrate has dried out completely. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, as the roots are sensitive to it.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed lightly every 4 weeks with a cactus or orchid fertiliser.
- Special features: As a houseplant, Hoya kerrii is extremely easy to care for and an eye-catcher in any home. Its slow growth rate also makes it suitable for small rooms.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, Hoya kerrii should be kept in a bright, warm spot. As it needs less water during its dormant period, the intervals between waterings should be extended. With the right care, this special houseplant remains a long-lasting highlight that delights with its unique leaf shape.
