History of the sweetheart plant Hoya kerrii Variegata
The sweetheart plant (Hoya kerrii Variegata) originally comes from Southeast Asia and is known for its heart-shaped, succulent leaves, which are often sold individually in small pots. The variegated form shows green-and-white to yellowish-edged leaves and is a sought-after novelty among collectors. It is especially popular as a houseplant because it is decorative, easy to care for and a lovely symbol of love and friendship.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Very bright spot with plenty of indirect light; some direct sun is tolerated.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–28 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: Average; copes well with a normal indoor climate.
-
Substrate: Loose, well-drained substrate, e.g. a mix of soil, perlite and some orchid substrate.
-
Watering: Water sparingly; let the substrate dry out well, as the leaves store water.
-
Feeding: Every 4 weeks during the growing season with a mild liquid fertiliser.
-
Special features: This houseplant grows very slowly, but with good care it can live for a long time and surprise you with decorative flowers.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it cooler (15–18 °C) and water more sparingly. The Hoya kerrii Variegata is a charming houseplant that earns a special place in the home thanks to its heart shape and variegation.
