History of Tillandsia 'Silver'
Tillandsia 'Silver' belongs to the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) and is a fascinating, epiphytic houseplant. It originally comes from the dry regions of Central and South America, where it grows on trees or rocks. It owes its silvery shimmering foliage to special trichomes that absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air. Thanks to its easy-care nature and exotic appearance, it is particularly popular with lovers of air-purifying houseplants.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light or gentle morning/evening sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–28 °C; avoid temperatures below 12 °C.
- Humidity: 50–70 %; regular misting or a humidifier is recommended.
- Substrate: No substrate needed, as it grows as an epiphyte; can be placed on wood, stone or in a bowl.
- Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week with low-lime water or briefly dip in water. Let excess water drain off well.
- Feeding: Every 4 weeks, mist with heavily diluted Tillandsia fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant does not need a pot and can be creatively incorporated into vertical gardens or decorations.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light: Plenty of indirect light or suitable artificial lighting.
- Temperature: 20–30 °C, not below 15 °C at night.
- Humidity: High humidity (60–80 %) is ideal.
- Substrate: Not necessary; can be placed on decorative material such as branches or stones.
- Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week or soak every 7–10 days. Important: ensure good air circulation after misting.
- Terrarium conditions: Particularly well suited to dry to moderately humid terrariums with good ventilation.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, mist less often and make sure the temperature does not drop below 12 °C. Humidity that is too low can be compensated for by occasional misting. Tillandsia 'Silver' is an exceptional choice for lovers of exotic houseplants and terrariums.
