History of Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides)
Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) belongs to the bromeliad family and is an epiphytic air plant that originally comes from the warm and humid regions of the Americas. It is particularly known for its hanging, grey-green growth, which adorns trees in the southern United States, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is not a true moss but a species of Tillandsia that absorbs water and nutrients directly from the air.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; some morning or evening sun is also possible.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; do not keep below 10 °C.
- Humidity: High (over 50 %); regular misting or keeping it in a humid environment is recommended.
- Substrate: No substrate needed; can hang freely or be attached to wood, wire or stones.
- Watering: Mist 2–3 times a week with low-lime water or soak in water for a few minutes once a week. Then let it dry well.
- Feeding: Every 3–4 weeks, mist with diluted bromeliad or Tillandsia fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant needs good air circulation to stay healthy and avoid rot.
Care as a terrarium plant
- Humidity: High (60–90 %); perfect for humid, well-ventilated terrariums.
- Location: Place it high up so that the moss can hang freely and air can circulate.
- Water requirements: Water less often than outside the terrarium, as the humidity is high.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, mist less, but do not let it dry out completely. Do not let temperatures drop below 10 °C. Spanish moss is a unique houseplant that brings a natural, tropical touch to your home with its elegant, hanging growth habit.
