History of the Tillandsia xerographica
Tillandsia xerographica belongs to the bromeliad family and comes from the dry regions of Central America, particularly Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. This impressive air plant is known for its silvery-green, spiralling leaves and, thanks to its beauty, is often called the “queen of tillandsias”. It is a popular houseplant because it grows without soil and is particularly easy to care for.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; direct sun is also well tolerated.
- Temperature: 18–30 °C is optimal; do not let it drop below 12 °C.
- Humidity: Needs moderate to high humidity; occasional misting is beneficial.
- Watering: Soak in low-lime water or mist 1–2 times a week. Then let it drain well so that no water collects at the base of the leaves.
- Feeding: Every 4 weeks, add a bromeliad or tillandsia fertiliser to the misting water.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light & location: Bright, but do not place directly under strong terrarium lamps, as the leaves may scorch.
- Humidity: Should be constantly between 50–70 %. In very humid terrariums, ensure good air circulation to prevent rot.
- Watering: Mist lightly with low-lime water every few days and let excess water drain off well.
- Substrate: No substrate needed – can be attached to wood, stones or other decorative elements.
Tillandsia xerographica is an extraordinary houseplant that impresses with its elegant shape and uncomplicated care. In a terrarium it creates a natural atmosphere, as long as good ventilation is ensured.
